Apprenticeships with PGL
PGL is in the unique position of being able to offer suitable employees the opportunity to enrol on the Apprenticeship programme in Active Leisure and Learning, Customer Service and Hospitality (Catering) through our employment opportunities and partnership with the Open College Network (OCN).
You must be employed by PGL to be eligible for a place on our Apprenticeship programme. PGL is not a training service provider, i.e. you cannot pay to go on a training course organised by PGL if you are not employed by us.
Apprenticeships are training programmes aimed at developing highly skilled employees and are nationally-recognised qualifications you can take with you beyond your time at PGL.
Choosing the Apprenticeship route is a great way to gain the skills and qualifications that will help you make a career in your chosen area without having to study full time – and you’ll get paid whilst you’re learning!
Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to earn money while you learn, getting lots ‘on the job’ experience as well as working towards a professional qualification that’s highly valued in the outdoors industry and catering profession.
You will develop your expertise and knowledge through a combination of on-the-job assessment (during the season) and classroom based and practical courses (during the winter).
There are two levels in the Apprenticeship programme – Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship.
PGL offers Apprenticeships in Hospitality (Catering), Customer Service and Active Leisure and Learning. The Apprenticeship you take will be matched to the job role you are in.
If you are interested in developing your career further and wish to apply for a place on our Apprenticeship programme you will need to talk your PGL Training Officer when they visit your centre throughout the season. They will be able to answer any questions you may have and will have copies of the Apprenticeship programme application form.
You will then have to complete an application form to be considered for a place on the programme. You will find out if you have successfully secured a place within two months of your application being received.
We are pleased to be able to offer two Apprenticeship programmes. Candidates can choose to start the course at the end of the operational season or on a ‘Roll On, Roll Off’ basis, where you can start the course during the PGL operational season.
How do Apprenticeships Work?
An Apprenticeship takes around a year to complete and comprises a mix of classroom-based learning which you undertake over the winter when centres are not operational, combined with practical work which is basically your job role.
The programme will give you a Certificate in Key Skills (English, Maths etc) as well as job-specific awards, for example NVQ Level 2 Food Processing and Cooking for those taking the Hospitality course.
You will be visited at your centre by your designated PGL Training Officer regularly whilst you are taking the course who will be there to support you, assess your work and answer and questions you may have.
Apprenticeships are a nationally-recognised industry qualification which you have for life and can take with you if you leave PGL.
