As a team-building exercise, several of PGL's general Managers will be competing in the Bristol Half Marathon in September, raising funds for the NSPPC.
Rob Ashley, General Manager at Little Canada, runs down the team's preparations.
The silence at the General Manager’s meeting was amazing; you could practically see the tumbleweed sweep through the office. Even the usual vocal members were quietened and shocked by the suggestion.
Kris Shipway, Manager of PGL's Lower Wye centres, still obviously running on the adrenaline from the New York marathon he completed at the end of 2007 (as featured in the February & March ’08 edition of the PGL Staff magazine), had suggested that we get a team together and run the Bristol Half Marathon in September.
The bravest put themselves forward and volunteered to run. An obligatory joke was made by someone about their suitability and fitness levels. I had a prior engagement, which was greeted with the expected questioning. With thoughts turning to planning the half marathon, the mood turned very positive.
A week later, an email was sent listing the runners, the ‘logistics’ team, and the sad news that Dave Lake (Dalguise) was out of the running, so to speak. He had injured himself at the Glenfinnan Highland Games and was unable to take part. With one member down, and the dreaded thought that I would have to administer first aid as part of the ‘logistics’ team, I quickly made up my mind – I was going to take Dave’s place.
I am now in Week three of my ten week training plan. I have been amazed at how much fun it is getting up at half six in the morning and going for a run. The staff team at Little Canada have now got used to my rather short shorts and no longer beep or swerve at me on the road. They have strict instructions not to offer me a lift unless I am crawling along the floor.
My only slight blip may be the two weeks in Cuba that I have booked during weeks five and six of my plan. Despite hours of trawling on the internet, I cannot find reference anywhere to how Mojhitos enhance the training plan.
The roll-call of runners so far includes PGL’s CEO Martin Davies, Operations Director Ian Officer and Neil Vanstone, UK Property Manager, together with General Managers Brian Evans (Beam House); Simon Dye (Tregoyd); Ali Tulloch (Osmington); Luke Shearring (Marchants Hill); Anthony Prince (Boreatton Park) and myself.
We are running in aid of the NSPCC and have paid the entry fees ourselves so all donations will go to the charity.
We all have sponsorship forms so please feel free to contact any of us to sponsor us.
We also have a Just Giving page where you can make a group donation for all of us: www.justgiving.com/pglmanagersbristolhalfmarathon2008
