Loz Gaskin, Liddington

Loz says: Since joining PGL in 2005 as an Activity Instructor/Group Leader, I have been given plenty of opportunities to gain experience and qualifications, which has been amazing!

From starting as an Activity Instructor/Group Leader at Boreatton Park, I progressed to Head of Paddles at La Fosca, in Spain, and to my current position as Chief Instructor.

I had originally planned to go to university but soon realised that being in a classroom studying illustration was not for me; I needed an active job that would allow me to be outdoors. I applied to PGL and started soon after – I haven’t looked back since!

I have progressed to Chief Instructor after being given the chance to develop and gain experience in different departments and job roles.I enjoy variety and feel I can easily transfer my skills in any direction.

In my current role, I oversee a team of 60 Activity Instructors/Group Leaders and am responsible for guest safety and session enjoyment. This involves reviewing the training of staff and observing sessions.

Through PGL, I have developed an interest in canoeing and during the previous two winters, I have been a paddle trainer on the paddle school for staff. It’s great to help other staff progress through the training I completed!

Since joining PGL, I have gained many qualifications and have worked in the UK, France and Spain. From having no activity qualifications, I obtained my BCU Level 3 (canoe), UKCC Trainee Level 2, White Water Safety and Rescue, Grand National Archery Society Club Leader and the British Orienteering Federation Level 1. This is together with my NVQ Level 3 in Activity Programming and my Professional Trainers Certificate. I am also currently completing my NVQ Level 4 in Management and AI Assessor Award.

I love my job and have developed so much more confidence through it. I enjoy management and logistics, and hope to keep progressing within PGL and gain further experience, with the next step to become Centre Operations Manager.

Working for PGL, you can make the most of the opportunities available and go as far as you want to go!
