Field Studies
A Contrasting Locality
Duration: 3 hours
About the unit
The children investigate a locality different from their own home town. Field sketches, land use mapping, digital photos and traffic counts are used to investigate settlement structure and function, which the group can then compare with their own environment.
Learning Objectives
• to collect, record and analyse data.

• to develop an awareness of economic activities.
• to use and interpret maps and plans.
• to develop the use of fieldwork skills.
Vocabulary
In this unit children will have the opportunity to use:
• Words relating to the location e.g. route, network, distance, direction, grid reference, settlement type, economic activity, landscape, leisure, beach, coast, sea, physical, human, land use, features, traffic, vehicles.
Expectations
At the end of this unit
Most children will:
Be able to describe the physical and human features of the locality; make comparisons between locations; begin to understand how humans can change the character of a location; recognise and describe how people can improve or damage the environment; use confidently a range of skills and different kinds of maps and resources to undertake investigations.
Some children will not have made so much progress and will:
Be able to describe the main physical and human features of the locality and make comparison with their own environment; begin to explain the causes of physical and human features in the landscape; identify how people affect the environment; with help, use a range of skills and different kinds of maps and resources to undertake investigations planned by the teacher.
Some children will have progressed further and will also:
Understand the importance of location in understanding places and offer explanations for patterns of physical or human features; recognise and describe how people can improve or damage the environment; describe different approaches taken to environmental management; use confidently a range of skills and different kinds of maps and resources to undertake a range of independent investigations in addition to those planned by the teacher.
