Field Studies

Choose from units focussing on Human and Physical Geography, Environmental Science and History themes. Traditional fieldwork can be combined with ICT project work and sessions of adventure activities.

Field Studies course themes:

Human Geography - land use, conflicts of interest, planning, citizenship, resource management, sustainability, pollution, conservation, tourism and industry.

Physical Geography - water cycles and systems, weather and climate change, light and sound, coastal landscapes, formations, mapping, data collection.

Geology - rock types, landscapes, fossil formation, geological timeline, soil formation and structure.

Biology - land and  marine habitats, ecology, evolution, food chains, life-cycles.

Barton Hall

Little Canada

On the Isle of Wight, minutes from the Fishbourne ferry, Little Canada is located in 48 acres of beautiful woodland on the banks of Wootton Creek. The centre offers distinctive log cabin style accommodation and a diverse range of indoor and outdoor activities. ICT and Field Studies courses are available in addition to Multi-Activity courses.


Loch Ranza Field Studies Centre

Loch Ranza, on the Isle of Arran  is PGL’s specialist Field Studies centre, catering for a wide range of courses including Geography, Geology, Biology and Environmental Science. Ardrossan Harbour, is less than 1 hour by rail from Glasgow and the ferry crossing to Brodick takes approximately 55 minutes. Exciting outdoor activities are also available.


Marchants Hill

Situated near Hindhead, Surrey and within easy reach of London and the M25, Marchants Hill boasts 45 acres of spacious and tranquil grounds. Recent additions include en suite two-storey lodge accommodation, sports barn and common room. Extensive land-based activities and ICT resources are available on site.


Osmington Bay

Located at the heart of the Dorset World Heritage coast, Osmington Bay comprises a 45 acre site with its own private beach. A popular centre for watersports as well as offering a comprehensive land-based activity programme, Osmington also runs a range of Field Studies and modular ICT courses.
