ICT Modules
Animate IT
Drawing inspiration from the residential experience and activities, Animate IT teaches pupils the theories behind animation and how to use the computers to produce their own short film. There are two ways in which this can be achieved, through stop-frame animation or through a drawn animation package.
Cars IT
In this unit participants will work with a team-mate to construct a virtual racing car which will be entered in a race. Changing the variables within their model will refine the performance of the car; the consequences of these changes can be seen as they aim for the optimum performance on the track. Pupils use worksheets and calculation tables to make predictions which are then tested on a series of trial laps. The session comes to a climax with 'The Big Race´ where everyone will see how their car performs against other teams from the school in a virtual Grand Prix.
Control IT
Pupils learn about computer control and robotics using Lego Mindstorms. Lego Robolab software creates procedures to complete a number of increasingly difficult challenges, culminating in the robot riding our indoor scaled-down zip wire.
Control IT 2
Building on the group's experiences from Control IT, pupils will develop their skills in computer control and robotics. Following on from the zip wire challenge in Control IT, they will aim to make our Lego RCX robot take part in another adventure session, such as quad biking or fencing.
Music IT
Music IT challenges pupils to create musical compositions which represent an experience they have had whilst staying with us. Using our massive library of sound samples, they put together their own compositions, having first discussed their experiences and how music can be used to represent those experiences.
Pulse IT
In the first of two sessions the group use data logging equipment to record their pulse rate during an adventure session. In the second session the group return to the IT lab and discuss the heart, how pulse rates are affected by exercise and adrenaline and discuss recording methods. They are encouraged to analyse and annotate their own pulse rate graphs by relating them to their experience during the abseiling session and present their results.
Project IT
Pupils use this session to review their stay at PGL, creating a multimedia report which includes all their ICT work from their Active-IT course. Project-IT offers an excellent opportunity to record experiences from every aspect of their stay on centre, with diary style comments, photographs and video of their most significant experiences.
Target IT
Using the scores recorded during Archery IT on a pocket computer, participants are introduced to spreadsheets and their uses. They download the data and use spreadsheets to perform some simple analysis and create graphs. Pupils then present this as a piece of work describing their experiences.
Video IT
This session is designed to be an introduction to making films using digital media. Pupils form small production teams to plan, shoot and edit a short film using the footage collected and clips from our video archive.
WhoDunn IT
Using a database, participants have to solve a series of imaginary crimes. They discuss the uses of databases and search methods. They then examine the evidence and perform searches to eliminate suspects and discover the villain. As they progress through the crimes the searches become more complex and the crimes themselves trickier to solve.
