Mathematics - Units of Study

The themes covered in our mathematics course relate to the teaching programmes for meeting the objectives within the National Curriculum Mathematics Framework.

All courses will be tailored to meet the needs of your Key Stage 3 pupils according to their level, from 4 to 8.

All units encourage students to use and apply maths, pupils will need to:

• Decide what data is relevant to an enquiry
• Collect small sets of data from surveys and observation
• Use a range of techniques, methods and resources
• Compare and evaluate solutions
• Use symbols, diagrams and graphs
• Explain and justify methods and conclusions

Numbers and the number system

(Teaching Programme references: 40-41, 70-77, 78-81)

Pupils start by collecting the data from taking part in activity sessions such as archery (pupil scores), Aeroball (number of goals per team) etc.

Depending on their level they will:
• use this data to calculate percentages
• consider the effect of percentage increase/decrease
• look at ratio (eg hits to misses)
• compare proportions
• consider their results both as fractions and equivalent decimals
• calculate percentages, proportion and ratios
• understand that when comparing measurements they must be in the same unit
• understand round numbers

Algebra

(Teaching Programme references: 157-7,160-3, 164-7,172-7)

By understanding real life situations from taking part in activities (eg measuring the length of the motorsport track and time taken to complete one lap, time to descend the length of the zip wire) pupils will:
• generate coordinate pairs
• construct simple linear function graphs (eg time/distance)
• calculate velocity

Shape, Space and Measures

(Teaching Programme references: 218-219, 228-31)

Through activities such as orienteering, pupils will learn and understand how to:
• create, use and interpret scale maps and coordinates
• consider units of measurement such as weight, area, mass, capacity, speed and angles
• use data to convert one metric unit to another and convert metric to imperial

Handling Data

(Teaching Programme references: 248-55,  268-275)

By collecting and organising scores from an activity, students will use this data to:
• identify and calculate mean, median and mode
• identify the relevant type of graph (eg bar/pie chart)
• construct diagrams using ICT to interpret the results
