Units of Study
Theme 4 – Chemical and Material Behaviour

Everyday Chemistry

Conducting a series of simple, safe experiments, pupils will investigate common-place chemical processes that occur at home, at school and on centre. They will be introduced to the concepts of chemical states, reactions, variables and waste products. They will begin to understand how many chemical reactions are talking place naturally within their environment and within household technology.

Forensic Investigation

Throughout their investigation the pupils are introduced to real life forensic science techniques by deciphering a series of clues and distinguishing between conclusive and suggestive evidence. This session includes fingerprinting with a range of chemicals, chemical and pH testing, observations, microscope work and code breaking.

This unit can be extended to fill up to four half day sessions; The Body, The Heist, The Getaway and The Courtroom, making a complete project.

Materials and Properties

By investigating the differences between some common liquids, solids and gases, pupils will be able to experiment with methods for effecting a change in state and begin to understand how to control the rate of transition. In particular, they will investigate the effects of heating and cooling, while identifying other influencing factors.
