Units of Study
Theme 3: Energy, Electricity and Forces

Alternative Energy Technology

Pupils are introduced to alternative technologies and see how weather can be used to create power. They visit different microclimates on centre and take weather measurements, at the same time different types of alternative technology are investigated in terms of cost, simplicity, environmental impact and production volumes. Using the information they have learned, groups make presentations describing an energy provision plan for the centre or for their school.

Falling and Gravity

Through a series of experiments with falling objects, pupils investigate the visual effects of gravity, relating these back to the theories of Sir Isaac Newton and moving on to consider the impacts on their own everyday lives and how a feeling of weightlessness can be induced. They will also consider the relationship that gravity has with other forces.

Levers, Pressures and Moments

Forces involved in the actions of various levers are considered by using a range of levers; both common examples found in everyday life and some more unusual simple machines. They will be challenged to design and build a machine for a weightlifting task.

Light and Sound

Pupils investigate how light travels, how it reacts on contact with a range of objects and media, and how those objects might appear viewed through a digital camera and the naked eye. Pupils will also look at how sound travels, how it changes and in particular the damage that loud noise can make. Pupils take photographs of light and its effects, and produce sound recordings to demonstrate their understanding.
