Theme 1: Organisms, Behaviour and Health

Fit & Healthy

Fit and Healthy - experimentsAfter discussing the concepts of health and fitness, including levels, measurement, guidelines and methods of improvement, pupils undertake a series of physical experiments, creating a database which they can use for comparison.

Habitats and Adaptations

By visiting a range of habitats around the centre and looking at soil type, light, air temperature, soil temperature and wind speed, pupils identify different habitiats and then a range of flora and fauna living in each habitat. They discuss how each organism has adapted to live in each habitat.

Rocky Shore

Pupils investigate a rocky shore environment, identifying and classifying the organisms they encounter. They investigate food chains and feeding methods, considering the impacts upon population and inter-species relationships.

Nature Trail

On a short walk around the centre, pupils explore the different plants and animals in the local area. They will discuss native and non-native species, population densities, wildlife corridors, competition and predation, and also human impacts. Includes surveys and data collection techniques both qualitative and quantitative.

Sounds Like Fun

Pupils produce recordings of their experiences to demonstrate their understanding of sound and its effects. They look at how sound travels, how it reacts and in particular the damage that loud noise can create. For each recording they will make a short audio explanation, resulting in a CD of their work to take back to school.
