Educational Tours : Iceland

 Iceland

Iceland inspires awe and wonder in every visitor. It is a relatively young landmass, fashioned by fire, ice, wind and water. Around eleven percent of the country’s surface is covered with glaciers and about thirty percent is lava fields. Its huge Vatnajökull glacier is larger than all the other glaciers in Europe combined.

Geologically speaking, Iceland is the youngest country in the world, only beginning to rise from the North Atlantic seabed about 25 million years ago, as a result of the volcanic eruptions still going on today – on average a volcano erupts every five years.

Courses available in Iceland

This extraordinary environment provides perfect case study material for geography, geology and environmental science students. An Icelandic study trip can provide first hand experience of the forms and mechanisms associated with a great many earth processes e.g plate tectonics, glaciation, coastal processes, natural resources and hazards.

In addition, as the least populated country in Europe, it provides unique study opportunities for students to discover how man has adapted to daily life within this hazardous environment. Building and farming methods can be investigated, along with the resulting cultural ideas and systems.

PGL Field Studies Course Representative

A tour of Iceland can include a PGL Field Studies Course Representative, who will liaise with  coach drivers, hotel managers and any activity providers on your behalf. Your Course Representative will lead the teaching sessions in the field and in the evening as required, using presentations geared to the relevant syllabus topics. For a supplement an Icelandic guide can be made available if required.
