News and Media: Parlez-vous Rugby?

04 October 2007

PGL’s premier French centre on the outskirts of Paris, the Château de Grand Romaine played host to a high-profile event arranged in conjunction with the British Council and the Rugby Football Union.

The week-long course at our centre brought together French and English-speaking secondary-school pupils.  They have trained as Sports Leaders to gain the skills necessary to organise a rugby festival on 5th October for 200 primary schools in the Paris region.

Timed to coincide with the 6th Rugby World Cup in France, the project was designed to take advantage of the occasion, involving young people from 6 nations, developing their skills and setting up strong international links between schools.

Who was invited?

The French pupils were selected from 25 schools across the country, with a particular focus on involving young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.  French schools were twinned with selected schools in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.  Each school was represented at this week’s planning event by two pupils – aspiring sports leaders.  The primary schools rugby festival will take place on 19th October as the culmination of their efforts!

Key support from the DfES and French Ministry of Education

The event has enjoyed the support and involvement of the DfES and the French Ministry of Education, local authorities for the schools in each country as well as the Rugby Football Unions of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France.  Also playing an important role were the Youth Sport Trust and its equivalent organisations in France the USEP and the UNSS – as well as, of course, PGL.

The event enjoyed a high profile launch event at the British Embassy, covered by French television as well as national and local press, where our Centre Manager in Paris Ian Balaam took the opportunity to give former England manager Sir Clive Woodward a few top tips!
