News and Media: Sponsorship for Olympic hopeful

19 November 2006

Canoeist, Andrew Hadfield from Worksop, Nottinghamshire is aiming to be part of the Great Britain Olympic team in 2008 with the help of the PGL, we are continuing our support and sponsoring him for the next three years.

The 21 year old was hooked from the time he first tried canoeing at PGL as an 11-year-old youngster on a trip with his school, Prospect Hill Junior School, Worksop in 1996 and has never looked back.  The visit to PGL changed his life.

paddleAndrew became one of the youngest canoeists selected for the Great Britain senior team after achieving 3rd place in the Three Race selection series held in Nottingham earlier this year and, as part of the World Class programme, he was identified as an athlete with the ability to achieve medal-winning performances at World, Olympic and European level within the next 8 years.

Currently he is embarking on his winter training with the objective of selection for the Great Britain team in Spring 2007.  This means training twice a day, six days a week with the focus on developing base fitness, learning new techniques and adapting old ones.

During the next few months, he will undertake a number of training camps in Holland where an artificial slalom course, the exact replica of the new Olympic course in Beijing, has been built.

In July, Andrew joined PGL at the BCU Youthfest 2006, a national paddlesport event for school and youth teams, where he demonstrated his skills and encouraged the youngsters taking part. He also took part in Peter Gordon Lawrence memorial event in August held in honour of the founder of the Company who died in 2004.

Martin Hudson, Communications Director at PGL, said, “we are delighted to continue to support Andrew and help him achieve his ambition.   Teachers are always telling us that taking part in our activity breaks can change children’s lives and it is certainly true for Andrew. ”
