Our Activity Instructor / Group Leaders combine instructing duties with pastoral care to ensure our guests have the best time possible with us. As an AI/GL, you'll introduce guests to a number of activities and deliver group taster sessions in our core activities, including orienteering, abseiling, climbing, fencing, motorsports, ropes challenge courses, initiative exercises and archery as well as helping to organise and participate in evening entertainments.
This is a fantastic opportunity to share your love of sports and the outdoors with our young guests. To work as an Activity Instructor/Group Leader you do not need to be qualified or highly experienced in any particular activity. However, you do need to be enthusiastic, willing to learn and have lots of energy!
No qualifications are required for this role as we offer a comprehensive training course to give you the skills, expertise and confidence to do your job. We look for applications from people who can demonstrate energy, enthusiasm and the ability to relate to young people. Any experience that you have gained working with young people will enhance your application, whether it's volunteering with a local youth group or paid employment.
This role is particularly great for anyone looking to start their career in the outdoor industry, searching for a career break or a rewarding gap year project.You'll pick up numerous transferable skills for your CV including group communication, confidence, resourcefulness and how to handle situations as they arise.
Our Activity Instructor / Group Leaders are the heart and soul of the PGL experience. You'll introduce guests to a variety of outdoor activities, from quad biking and fencing to climbing and initiative exercises.
This role offers a great deal of variety. You will find yourself doing lots of different activities, and also find yourself organising evening entertainment or liaising with visiting teachers and party leaders.
In the Activity Instructor/Group Leader dual role you will gain invaluable knowledge, skills and experience whilst working towards nationally recognised qualifications, all free of charge. Previous experience will help your application but is not vital. If you are new to PGL and/or have limited experience within the sector you will be invited to attend our 10-day pre-employment selection and training course. Once employed, you will automatically be enrolled onto our Apprenticeship Foundation Programme.
This includes a Level 2 Certificate in Introductory Work in the Outdoors. This is delivered and assessed in the work place and is supported by a comprehensive centre induction, regular observations, feedback and performance reviews. You will then be eligible to continue your studies by enrolling onto an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership or Customer Service.
There are a number of opportunities for you to extend your experience, knowledge and skills at PGL. We encourage all our employees to create and maintain a Personal Development Plan (PDP) that can be used to identify and work towards their career goals, supported by our extensive range of formal and informal development opportunities. Some in-house and National Governing Body (NGB) coaching qualifications are also available.
Career progression routes for Activity Instructors / Group Leaders include activity specific roles that require specialist qualifications e.g. Canoe Instructor and more generic roles such as Team Leader, Chief Instructor or Guest Care Manager.

In my job I try and make everyday fun for our guests. I run various activity sessions which at times is challenging but overall good fun!
Working with children, meeting new people every day and working outdoors is what make this job so enjoyable. The role is definitely a change from the normal 9-5.
Living on centre is a good experience. There is a great social life and its interesting living with so many different people from all over the world.
People should come and work with PGL because it’s a great experience, a rewarding job, you meet lots of people and see different place. It is a job that’s fun.
All new Activity Instructor/Group Leaders with no or limited previous experience will join our Apprenticeship Foundation Programme and receive £ 120.37 per week in the UK and £111.00 overseas. Activity Instructor/Group Leaders that graduate from the Apprenticeship Programme will move on to NMW (up to £273 per week) in the UK and an increased wage overseas.
Activity Instructor/Group Leaders will receive on site accommodation at a highly subsidised £35.56 per week, inclusive of all bills, so there is no need to worry about council tax or utilities. Any Activity Instructor/Group Leaders working overseas will receive free accommodation.
Apprentice and overseas Activity Instructor/Group Leaders will receive their meals free. For UK graduate Activity Instructor/Group Leaders a meal package option is available which works out at just £1.86 per meal (£39.00pw). This includes breakfast, lunch and evening meal – even on your days off! There’s always a fresh salad bar option as well as soup and a cooked main course, dessert, fresh fruit and hot drinks.
As an Activity Instructor/Group Leader your staff package will include a practical and durable PGL staff uniform with no deposit required. The uniform you are given depends on your job role, working location and contract length.
