working as an Activity Instructor/Group Leader

The most popular job at PGL! If you're full of energy then this is the role for you: combining instructing and group leading, you'll lead activity sessions, organise evening entertainments and ensure your group enjoys the best stay possible.

Our Activity Instructor / Group Leaders combine instructing duties with pastoral care to ensure our guests have the best time possible with us. As an AI/GL, you'll introduce guests to a number of activities and deliver group taster sessions in our core activities, including orienteering, abseiling, climbing, fencing, motorsports, ropes challenge courses, initiative exercises and archery as well as helping to organise and participate in evening entertainments.

This is a fantastic opportunity to share your love of sports and the outdoors with our young guests. To work as an Activity Instructor/Group Leader you do not need to be qualified or highly experienced in any particular activity. However, you do need to be enthusiastic, willing to learn and have lots of energy!

Skills

Key Responsibilities

Our Activity Instructor / Group Leaders are the heart and soul of the PGL experience. You'll introduce guests to a variety of outdoor activities, from quad biking and fencing to climbing and initiative exercises.

This role offers a great deal of variety. You will find yourself doing lots of different activities, and also find yourself organising evening entertainment or liaising with visiting teachers and party leaders.

Learning and Development

In the Activity Instructor/Group Leader dual role you will gain invaluable knowledge, skills and experience whilst working towards nationally recognised qualifications, all free of charge. Previous experience will help your application but is not vital. If you are new to PGL and/or have limited experience within the sector you will be invited to attend our 10-day pre-employment selection and training course. Once employed, you will automatically be enrolled onto our Apprenticeship Foundation Programme.

This includes a Level 2 Certificate in Introductory Work in the Outdoors. This is delivered and assessed in the work place and is supported by a comprehensive centre induction, regular observations, feedback and performance reviews.  You will then be eligible to continue your studies by enrolling onto an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership or Customer Service.

Progression Opportunities

There are a number of opportunities for you to extend your experience, knowledge and skills at PGL. We encourage all our employees to create and maintain a Personal Development Plan (PDP) that can be used to identify and work towards their career goals, supported by our extensive range of formal and informal development opportunities. Some in-house and National Governing Body (NGB) coaching qualifications are also available.

Career progression routes for Activity Instructors / Group Leaders include activity specific roles that require specialist qualifications e.g. Canoe Instructor and more generic roles such as Team Leader, Chief Instructor or Guest Care Manager.
