Working as a Catering Assistant

Your first step into the world of catering...

We can’t promise you a quick and easy route to becoming the next Jamie Oliver or Nigella Lawson, because there’s no such thing, however we can provide you a fantastic platform to learn and the opportunity to take your catering career to the limit. The role of Catering Assistant is your first step on the ladder. Your lack of experience won’t matter because with hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn being a Catering Assistant with PGL is a perfect chance to progress on our Apprenticeship programme and achieve your catering dreams.

To work in a kitchen environment you need a passion and a pride in what you’re doing – in everything from pot washing to serving food to guests, and from cleaning work surfaces to preparing fresh salads. The details matter. You’ll work with a team of like-minded people who care about delivering the very best dining experience for our guests and they’ll help support you in achieving the high standards of customer service required in a PGL kitchen. Many of our Head Chefs joined us in the Catering Assistant role and have progressed to take charge. The proof really is in the pudding!

Skills

Key Responsibilities

You'll assist the Chefs in preparing balanced, wholesome meals that fuel our guests and staff for their day of activities. This is a varied role that includes assisting with food preparation, serving from our canteen bays and ensuring the kitchen and dining areas are kept clean, tidy and adhere to our health and safety standards.

Part of your working week will involve a combination of breakfast, lunch and evening meal shifts. You may have the chance to try your centre's activities during your free time, building up your competency in the process. You may also participate in evening entertainments for our guests.

Learning and Development

When you start your job as a Catering Assistant you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge, skills and experience whilst working towards nationally recognised qualifications, all free of charge. Previous catering experience is a bonus but is not vital. If you are new to PGL and/or have catering experience within the sector you will be enrolled onto our Hospitality Apprenticeship Programme.

This is delivered and assessed in the work place and is supported by a comprehensive centre induction, job specific training, workbooks, one-to-one observations with verbal and written feedback, and regular performance reviews. All of this will count towards the achievement of your hospitality apprenticeship.

Progression Opportunities

There are a number of opportunities for you to extend your experience, knowledge and skills at PGL. We encourage all our employees to create and maintain a Personal Development Plan (PDP) that can be used to identify and work towards their career goals.

This is supported by our extensive range of formal and informal development opportunities. Career progression routes for Catering Assistants include roles such as Assistant Chef, Chef or Dining Room Supervisor
