Congratulations Joe Clarke!

PGL Sponsored Athlete Programme

If like us, you were glued to the coverage of the Rio Olympics this summer, you may have watched Joe Clarke put in a fantastic performance to win his gold medal in the K1 Kayak. Like us, you might also have cheered yourself hoarse in the process!

Joe was sponsored by PGL for five years and having watched him progress, we were over the moon that his hard work and dedication paid off. Congratulations Joe on your well-deserved success! We are so pleased and proud to have been a small part of the journey that took you to Rio.

Joe is not the only athlete that has been sponsored by PGL over the last few years and this year we hope to support even more. With this in mind, we are offering a number of grants to support promising athletes aged 11-18 and in full time education. We would like to support more young people who not only have the potential to be successful in their own right but who, like Joe will also help inspire others.

Anyone receiving a grant will be in good company - over the last few years we have supported a number of promising athletes who we continue to support in 2016; Becky Reed, Jai Geyer and Maisie Potter. These athletes have all had busy summers and we look forward to following their progress over the rest of the year.

Becky Reed - Netball

Becky has just got back from New Zealand where she played for the England Under 21's Indoor Netball team, narrowly missing out on Silver Medal in a penalty shoot-out against Australia.

"Most incredible experience ever! Received my first 13 caps for England whilst at the championships. I cannot thank PGL enough for helping my childhood dreams become reality - the support has been greatly appreciated." Becky Reed.

Jai Geyer - Ski

Having been selected for the new British Alpine Ski Team, Jai has been very busy with extensive training and fitness testing all summer.

"I completed an indoor Slalom camp in Germany - the facilities were great as they inject water into the slopes for consistent icy conditions. Guaranteed snow conditions also enable us to test equipment and work on technique in a closed environment. The rigorous physical testing also went well, now time for a prolonged period of conditioning before the next training camp in Saas Fee, Switzerland. It has to be one of my favourites ... I can't wait!" Jai Geyer.

Maisie Potter - Snowboard Cross

Maisie has also had a busy summer, working hard and enjoying spending some time on a different kind of board at Surf Snowdonia before heading back to the snow again at the end of this month - read more on her blog.

"Winter is just around the corner with pre-season training starting in October on the glaciers in Austria. The first races are the European Cup races held in Pitztal, same as last year, at the beginning of December followed by a World Cup in Montafon, also in Austria. Super excited to get back on snow!" Maisie Potter.

If you would like to apply to become a PGL Sponsored Athlete, or are able to identify or help a young person apply, full details and an application form are available here. We hope that with your help PGL can support and encourage the next generation of athletes and medal winners.
