Easter is the best time for kids to enjoy a break from school, eat loads of chocolate eggs, and spend quality time with family. Speaking of which, why not make the most of the season by starting your own family Easter traditions!

Whether you have toddlers eager to do a creative arts-and-crafts project or teens who appreciate a more relaxed Spring brunch, establishing annual traditions is a wonderful way to build lasting memories.

In this blog, we’ll share five fun Easter traditions you can start with your family and cherish year after year. These can be as simple as baking in the kitchen or as adventurous as going on a PGL family break full of thrills and spills!

The benefits of Easter traditions for families

Whether it’s eating pancakes for breakfast, searching for eggs around the garden, or having a Sunday roast with your family, many of us fondly remember the joys of Easter as children. Now, you have the chance to create your very own Easter traditions and rituals that your kids can get involved with and treasure for years to come! Here are just a few reasons why Easter traditions are so important:

Strengthens connections

Taking part in fun Easter traditions together gives everyone a chance to slow down and reconnect, inviting moments of conversation, laughter and teamwork. Family meals, games, and movie nights all help strengthen bonds through shared experiences. Additionally, children feel more secure when traditions are repeated each year, building a strong sense of belonging and predictability that supports the emotional wellbeing of the whole family.

Teaches family values

Easter traditions are also a great way to pass on important values that shape your children's view of life. The ritual of gathering around a table for a meal, or the act of giving an Easter egg to someone, can instil core principles of kindness, generosity, and love for one another. By involving your kids in these activities, you help them develop a keen sense of empathy and respect from an early age, qualities they’ll carry into adulthood.

Encourages creativity

From painting eggs and baking traditional treats like hot-cross buns to making your own bunny bonnets, these hands-on activities allow children and parents to step away from screens and explore colours, textures, and new skills in a relaxed setting. Parents can gently introduce stories and symbols associated with the season through play, while kids enjoy the mess and fun of it all!

Five family easter traditions

Ready to start some fun, new Easter traditions with your family? We've compiled a list of inspiring ideas below.

1. Decorate Easter eggs

Let’s begin with Easter egg decorating! This traditional activity is suitable for all ages, blending imagination and fun into one colourful artistic session. Kids learn to express themselves through art, using paint, stickers, or glitter, whilst developing their fine motor skills by carefully handling the eggs and using tools to apply their designs. For parents, it’s a calming, relaxing way to connect, collaborate, and offer gentle guidance to support their kids' creativity.

How to do it:

  1. Start by boiling the eggs for 10 minutes until hard, then let them cool. Alternatively, use pre-made wooden eggs for a longer-lasting, sustainable option.
  2. Next, prepare your workspace with newspapers or a tablecloth, providing paints (non-toxic and washable), brushes, markers, stickers, and biodegradable glitter.
  3. Then, let their imaginations run wild! You could even suggest a theme, such as spring flowers or animals.
  4. Once decorated, eggs can be displayed in baskets, used for an Easter egg hunt, or simply admired as part of your seasonal décor.

2. Bake a cake together

Traditionally, at the end of a Lenten fast, a 40-day, pre-Easter season of preparation observed by many Christians, many families celebrate by indulging in delicious desserts. From simple Victoria sponges to zesty lemon drizzles and rich chocolate cakes, there are many styles of cake to make with your kids. Besides producing a tasty treat at the end, baking teaches practical skills such as measuring, following instructions, and kitchen safety. It also demonstrates the value of patience and cooperation through teamwork.

How to do it:

  1. Pick a recipe that gives everyone involved their own task, such as a classic carrot cake.
  2. Gather all the ingredients (e.g., grated carrots, eggs, flour, sugar, oil, and spices) as well as the utensils you’ll need, like mixing bowls, measuring cups, whisks, and spatulas.
  3. Assign everyone a task. Younger children can help measure and mix the dry ingredients, stir in the carrots, or line the cake tin with baking paper. Older kids can whisk the wet ingredients and carefully combine the batter.
  4. When baked, allow the cake to cool for 5 minutes, then spread cream cheese frosting evenly, and let children sprinkle with toppings of your choice, such as grated carrot or even mini chocolate eggs.

3. Enjoy gardening

Spring is a time for renewal and growth, so why not celebrate by putting on your gloves and planting some flowers, seeds, or vegetables together? Gardening is a family-friendly activity where kids learn the importance of responsibility and observation. They’ll get to see how a seed needs water, sunlight, and care to thrive. Over time, it will serve as a reminder of your days spent outside together, and you’ll be rewarded with vibrant flowers, fresh herbs, and happy memories!

How to do it:

  1. Prepare your patch. You don’t need a massive allotment; a few pots on a windowsill or a small flowerbed will do.
  2. Choose easy-to-grow seeds, such as tulips, daffodils, or herbs like mint and basil.
  3. Let your children fill the pots or the bed with compost and soil, then dig a small hole, drop the seeds in, and water them carefully.
  4. Make sure to check the plants daily, watering and watching them grow.

4. Take an afternoon walk

This outdoor Easter activity is the perfect excuse to stretch your legs and enjoy the beauty of spring as a family. Free from distraction, an afternoon walk allows families to explore their environment, have meaningful conversations, and notice the subtle seasonal changes, such as the sound of birdsong or bluebells blooming. Plus, the green spaces, vitamin D intake and fresh air all help to boost our physical and mental wellbeing by reducing stress and increasing energy levels.

How to do it:

  1. Choose a route suitable for all ages, either through a local park, a forest, or on a countryside path.
  2. Pack water bottles and snacks for your trip and allow plenty of time to stop and explore your surroundings.
  3. Bring a small notebook or camera to record what you see. This could be natural objects like leaves, flowers, or stones, or even different species of insects.
  4. Dress appropriately for the weather by taking a waterproof jacket, and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
