So you want to know all about the history of Disneyland Paris? Fantastic! We’re here to tell you all about how it all started, from its opening to the creation of its world-famous and much-loved rides.

How old is Disneyland Paris?

Disneyland Paris has recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, putting on magical events throughout the year to make it more magical than ever! The grand opening of this Disney paradise was in 1992 on 12 April — a monumental day for all Disney fans!

So what was there when it opened? Disneyland had one theme park, multiple hotels, and an entertainment complex which was the Disney Village. But hasn’t it just grown and grown!

When was Disneyland Paris built?

This enchanted kingdom first started in 1988, with construction beginning just after it was agreed Disneyland would be built on the outskirts of Paris. But a quick and easy link was needed so guests could get from the centre of Paris and its airports to Disneyland, so that’s exactly what was built. On April 1st 1992, the Marne-la-Vallée – Chessy RER regional train station opened, just in time for the grand opening of Disneyland Paris! This meant that people could get to Disneyland from Paris in as little as 35 minutes.

Walt Disney Studios

In 2002, Disneyland opened the Walt Disney Studios Park, where guests can enjoy getting to experience behind-the-scenes action of their movies. This features attractions such as:

  • Cars - Four Wheels Rally
  • Disney Studio 1
  • Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin
  • Ratatouille: The Adventure

The first Disneyland Paris rides and attractions

Let’s explore some of the rides that have been at Disneyland Paris since day one! You’ll find they’re mostly related to Disney’s classic films. Let’s dive in shall we?

Big Thunder Mountain

Perhaps the biggest thrill you could get on opening day was at Big Thunder Mountain. It’s one of Disneyland Paris’ most loved attractions and that comes as no surprise! This fast-paced train cart ride gives you a taste of the Wild West, with steep peaks, magnificent drops and a truly immersive experience.

Sleeping Beauty’s Castle

This is an iconic attraction at Disneyland Paris — the one anybody can recognise. Its pink and blue castle walls appear at least once in visitor’s photo collections, as it stands tall above everything else.

It’s a Small World

It’s a Small World is a slow boat ride along the Seven Seaways canal, featuring almost 300 singing dolls representing children from all over the world. It’s a great ride for your little ones.
