Immersing your children in nature and teaching them how to make the most of the environment around them can be so fulfilling. With bushcraft camps, they can do exactly that, while building on a range of other skills and having plenty of fun!

What is bushcraft?

One definition of bushcraft describes it as the use and practice of skills used to survive and thrive in a natural environment.

During a bushcraft camp with PGL, your child will learn all about bushcraft ethos as well as activities such as building shelters, fire lighting, whittling, outdoor cooking, plant and tree ID and more! There’s so much to discover. And, one of the best things about it is that they can enjoy this experience with friends and children of similar age.

What are the benefits of bushcraft camps for children?

Greater independence

Children will develop their independence on bushcraft camps as they complete a range of bushcraft activities independently and with others. Trusting them with the materials and tools used in these kinds of activities can help children feel more independent and confident in doing things for themselves.

Develop valuable survival skills

Although your child may never need to use these skills in a real-life survival situation, it’s always beneficial to know, and they can come in handy in other environments. Things like navigation and emergency signalling may be required more often than needing to build a shelter. Nevertheless, they’re all incredible skills to have in your arsenal.

Boosts problem-solving skills

Bushcraft is all about using initiative. What’s able to be used depends on what’s available in the current environment, which requires them to assess the situation and come up with solutions. Our bushcraft activities at PGL encourage the development of transferable problem-solving skills, coming in useful for many other situations like at school.

Promotes teamwork

When a group works towards a common goal, it boosts all of their teamwork and collaboration skills. At bushcraft camps, your child will build shelters with others and could even become responsible for certain tasks as activities are shared between groups. It’s always fantastic for children to work on teamwork skills because they’ll be required throughout life.

Increases environmental awareness

A more unique benefit of bushcraft activities is how they help increase children’s environmental awareness. It teaches them about the ethos of bushcraft, including our responsibility towards the environment. A bushcraft camp provides a platform for children to develop an understanding and respect for their natural surroundings. Children can recognise how much we rely on the environment and how important it is to look after it.
