Six things to do at the weekend with kids
Weekends are the perfect chance to hit pause on the usual routine, switch off our screens, and make new memories that your kids will remember for years. From exploring nature trails and visiting zoos, to tackling rock climbing walls and going for a family bike ride, here are six exciting things to try at the weekend:
1. Explore a local nature trail
Tie up your laces, grab your coat and set off on a family nature walk. This is a fantastic way to get the whole family outside, stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air. The UK is home to thousands of beautiful countryside trails, forests, and parks, many of which are easily accessible and budget-friendly.
Kids can learn more about the environment, discover wildlife like birds, frogs, and squirrels, and even take a lesson on the area's history along the way. Plus, there are trails for every fitness level, from gentle strolls for younger children to more challenging paths that teens will love.
Tips:
- Wear sturdy shoes (trainers or boots), layers and waterproofs, especially on rainy or cold days.
- Bring a backpack with water, snacks (e.g., fruit or sandwiches) and a pair of binoculars to spot all the amazing creatures and critters you’ll find.
- Check the websites for accessible trail maps and information on events, workshops or guided tours to enhance your experience.
2. Try rock climbing
If you’re looking for a family weekend activity that will get everyone’s heart pumping, try rock climbing! Whether you opt for an indoor climbing wall or an outdoor tower, it’s a thrilling way to get active, developing strength in your arms and legs, and improving coordination through hand-and-foot placement.
With every ascent, you’ll reach new heights together, building not just confidence but also a deeper bond as a family. How high can you go? Race to the top and see who is the fastest. Climbing is available at both of our locations in Devon and Lincolnshire.
Tips:
- Start with easier routes, then gradually tackle more challenging climbs as your skills and courage grow.
- Take regular breaks when needed, stay hydrated and celebrate every achievement to keep everyone motivated.
3. Visit animals at the zoo
A day at the zoo is a fun and educational experience that the whole family will love! You can see exotic species from towering giraffes to cheeky monkeys up close and take part in feeding or other interactive activities, such as keeper talks, themed trails, or animal-handling demonstrations.
It’s also a great way to gain insight into current conservation efforts, teaching kids the importance of biodiversity and wildlife protection. For instance, they can learn how climate change is affecting habitats, while engaging with exhibits allows children to develop a greater appreciation for the natural world.
Tips:
- Arrive early to avoid long queues and make the most of your day.
- Check the zoo's schedules for keeper talks and feeding times to learn amazing facts from experts.
- Try a scavenger hunt (e.g., find something striped, or an animal with horns), or play a classic game of “I Spy”.
4. Take a stroll along the beach
A leisurely stroll along the sandy beach is fun for all! Take in the sights as the waves settle and walk barefoot in the sand — a grounding experience that encourages mindfulness and relaxation. The fresh sea breeze and vitamin D from the sun will also help boost your mood and energy levels for an active weekend of adventures.
Other things to do at the beach include games like volleyball or frisbee, building a sandcastle, or exploring the rock pools to discover crabs, starfish, and other sea creatures.
Tips:
- Pack a bucket and spade, a beach towel, plenty of water, and snacks to keep everyone fueled and happy.
- Apply a high-SPF suncream (30 or above), especially every couple of hours, to keep skin protected from the sun.
- Check local tide times before you settle in so your belongings stay safe and the family can enjoy the beach without unexpected waves.
5. Make a splash at an aqua park
Find your nearest aqua park and see who can make it across the inflatable course the quickest! Aqua parks are great for burning off some excess energy as you race around the watercourse, slide down the huge slides, and soar high in the air.
Or, if you prefer something more relaxing, float along a lazy river and soak up the sun while still enjoying the park’s fun atmosphere. Our Devon centre offers families a mix of exciting team games and swimming, with staff on hand to provide constant supervision as your kids paddle, splash, and race to victory.
Tips:
- Look up the aqua park’s height and age restrictions online before you go to ensure everyone can participate.
- Water shoes or flip-flops are a must for walking on slippery surfaces and between rides.
- Take a separate, small bag with dry clothes and towels to make the journey home much more comfortable.
6. Go for a bike ride
There’s nothing quite like going for a bike ride around your home or local park with your family. Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that allows families to cover more ground than walking, while enjoying the great outdoors.
It also promotes independence and confidence in kids as they learn to navigate different paths and maintain balance on two wheels. Plan a route that ends at a scenic spot or local cafe for an extra treat, giving everyone a chance to relax and refuel before heading back home.
Tips:
- Make sure every rider wears a properly fitted helmet by using the “"2-V-1 Rule": two fingers above the eyebrows, straps form a V under the ears and 1 finger can fit between it and your chin.
- Wear brightly coloured clothes or reflective vests, especially if riding at dusk or on overcast days. A bell on each bike is also useful for alerting others.
- If you have younger kids, they can ride in a trailer or a seat attached to your bike.
