How do you teach your child to cook? How do you plan a cooking activity for your children? These are just a few questions we've heard over the years, and the truth is, there are many ways.

One day at PGL, we thought it'd be a great idea to have cooking and baking camps for those children who love an adventure in the kitchen and the outdoors! So that's exactly what we did, as we know what children learn from cooking and baking is going to be invaluable to them for the rest of their lives.

Benefits of cooking with kids

Cooking and baking with children is a fun and educational way to introduce them to the world of food and teach them how a tray full of ingredients becomes a plate of goodness ready for them to eat.

Improved cooking skills

It goes without saying, but cooking with your children can help them to develop practical skills such as measuring, mixing, and following recipes. The same goes with baking too! When your little ones come back from a PGL cooking camp, you never know; you could have a future bake-off winner on your hands.

Encourages healthy eating habits

When you teach your child to cook, you can also use this as an opportunity to explain why the fruit and/or vegetables you're using are healthy and how it helps them. Encouraging healthy eating habits at an early stage is a fantastic way to set them up for the future.

Enhances creativity and imagination

We LOVE this at PGL! As a child, everything is about experimenting, so why should it be any different when introducing them to cooking and baking. Well, on a cooking camp with PGL, your child will delve into cuisine from all over the world. They'll be able to try every dish they cook. After all, a master chef will always taste their food.

Boosts self-esteem and confidence

When children see what they have produced, it puts a smile on their faces. The time and effort put into chopping, kneading, stirring, and mixing really pays off for them and helps to boost their confidence when they feel proud of what they have made.

Improves maths and science skills

They might only be cooking, but baking with children involves a range of mathematical and scientific skills. From measuring ingredients and making sure you have the correct ratios, to chemical reactions when cooking or baking, your children might not even think about it, but they're developing their maths and science skills while they're at it.

Encourages independence

Although they won't be cooking dinner for the whole family anytime soon, cooking with children still gives them the skills they need to prepare meals on their own. Eventually, they'll want to make their own meals. Because you know how fantastic they are from your cooking lessons together (or a cooking camp with PGL), you'll be confident in their ability to maybe make their own lunch (with your supervision, of course).

Our cooking camps!

Like the look of all these benefits of cooking with kids? Interested in sending your child to one of PGL's cooking and baking camps? Here are the two cooking camps that we offer throughout the summer holidays:

Cooks Academy

Bon appétit! In this delightful culinary camp, your child will learn the basics of preparing the kitchen and workspace and how to use the equipment. Then they'll be straight to it! With different themes every day, including Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Moroccan, your little chefs will prepare and cook various meals with guidance from our chefs. Starters, mains, desserts, you name it - it's always a winner.

They'll spend six half days with our cooking experts and the other half days enjoying our classic, adventure-filled activities!

(Available at Liddington, Osmington Bay, and Marchants Hill).

Bake It

It's bake-off time! Your child will learn the basics of how to prepare the kitchen and workspace and how to use the equipment, and then get cracking baking all sorts of goodies. Cakes, cookies, and pastries will be the main focus. When our team bakes with  children, we encourage them to  learn how to use mixers and ovens, weigh, fold, sift, mix, glaze, and pipe! Be sure to ask them to bake you some treats when they come home!

Just like the Cooks Academy, your children will spend six half days doing baking activities for children with our cooking experts and the other half days enjoying our action-packed activities!

What to bring to our culinary camps

We ask that your children wear closed-toe shoes and long trousers, tie their hair back and remove jewellery. Then we'll sort the rest! Any dietary requirements? No problem, just let us know with plenty of notice, and we'll try our best to accommodate.
